Severe Cold Wave in North India, Over 200 Deaths Reported

Date: 18th December 2024

Life Disrupted by the Severe Cold:
The beginning of December 2024 witnessed a severe cold wave in North India, severely affecting daily life. Northern states, especially Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Delhi, saw temperatures plummet to 3-4°C due to snowfall and cold winds, causing over 200 deaths from the extreme cold.

The cold wave has caused major disruptions on the roads, and dense fog has further impacted road and rail traffic. Several flights and trains were delayed, causing major inconvenience to travelers. Experts have stated that this cold wave is becoming a yearly trend, and this time, temperatures have hit their lowest in the past 20 years.

Struggling People in the Cold:
The most affected are the poor and those living in slums. Although the administration has set up relief shelters, there is a shortage of blankets, warm clothes, and other essential supplies. Many people have lost their lives, and this incident raises the question of whether the administration is doing enough to prevent such fatalities due to the cold.

Moreover, special attention is needed to protect children and the elderly, as these groups are particularly vulnerable to the cold. Doctors have urged people to stay indoors, wear warm clothes, keep fires burning, and eat warm food to stay safe.

Need for Better Preparation in the Future:
This incident clearly shows that the government and administration need to develop a stronger plan for winter preparedness in North India. Both urban and rural areas require effective measures to prevent cold-related deaths and damage, ensuring a safer future during the winter season.
